Minimalism is a hot topic right now, and rightfully so.
I started my journey at the beginning of the month because I was just so tired of seeing how much of an incredible mess I was living in. I am a teacher, so having to move an entire classroom worth of materials into a home, that was already full and crowded, and then having to stay home, in all that mess, all day long, everyday?? It. Was. Insane.
I knew it was time to change.
Now, arguably, I could have started since much earlier, but I am giving myself grace and saying, it was a lot to take on, switching over to teaching online especially for first grade, so it's fine. The important thing is that I started.
I decided to start with my biggest problem area, the closet. I have so many clothes. I used to sew also, which made me accumulate so many more clothes than I otherwise would have.
I watched a ton of videos on minimalism and they all have different takes on it, but the thing that most stood out to me was that it is an on going process.
Here is how I'm doing so far:
House clothes
65 "house shirts" --> 35
35 "house pants" --> 25
Makeup
36 lipsticks --> 24
27 eyeliners --> 7
20 eyeshadows --> 11
18 nail polishes --> 5
Miscellaneous
8 stuffed animals --> 2
2 bean bag chairs --> 0
6 jumbo scented candles --> 1
It's not much but I'm already loving the results so far. It definitely makes the place feel much more organized and it's helping me identify more items that are no longer serving a purpose in my life. I will continue to work on this, picking at least 1 area per week to work on and pick out items from.
My biggest help has been the advice to take everything out, then put back everything you absolutely love. Anything that you didn't with certainty put back, look through it, and pick through it. More than likely, there will be at least a couple of things you find, that you benefit more from the space they open up for you, than from the space they take up.
